About the Department

 

Textiles and Apparel Designing is one of the important disciplines of Community Science. It relates the physical properties of textiles to human need for functional and fashionable clothing and home accessories. Since the inception of the College in 1966, the courses of the discipline have been an integral part of the undergraduate programme. Post Graduate programme in the department was introduced in 1984 and Ph.D Programme in July 2008-09.

To enable students with better job opportunities after completion of graduation, the department started professional package on Apparel Production Management in the year 2006, which has been reoriented in new undergraduate degree programme 3+1 BSc (Hons) Community Science. So far 66 vocational students, 91 M.Sc. and 15 Ph.D. students have passed out from the department.

 

Mission

To provide qualitative teaching, need based research and skill trainings with the aim to groom the youngsters as enterprising promising youth confident to face the challenges of career and life and to contribute to the society and nation.

 

Objectives:

    To impart training to make the students aware of the diversity of textile products and develop textile knowledge in selecting, developing and evaluating products.

         To develop skill of synthesizing product development through aesthetic and functional requirements, producibility, and market needs.

         To understand the contributions textiles, make to contemporary lifestyles as apparel, furnishings and industrial products.

 

         To inculcate entrepreneurial skills and professional knowledge of textiles for diverse career options.

Research

 

AICRP

All India Coordinated Research Project in Home-Science-Clothing and Textiles sponsored by Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR), New Delhi is ongoing in the department since 1996.The focus of this interdisciplinary project has been on agriculture as a family enterprise, which engages rural women in a wide range of activities and varying work domains in different agro-climatic conditions for the development of rural families and society. This project was initiated with the aim to develop ‘Value addition of agro animal based fiber and natural dyes.

AICRP on Home Science is now being coordinated by ICAR-CIWA with the broad objectives of “empowering women in agriculture for their improved nutrition, livelihood security, drudgery reduction & mitigating occupational health-hazards thus sustaining productivity and healthy life.”, functional clothing and utilization of farm waste with emphasis on promotion of vocational skills among adolescent girls and rural youth.         Another main objective of the project is ‘comprehensive use of underutilized natural fibers and plant sources for sustainable livelihood of farm families.

Extension

              Village trainings and intervention on need based areas for empowerment of rural youth and women is carried out in different villages under various projects like NATP, Naip, ICAR-AICRP, as Part of course programme, students research and RAWE, besides participation in other activities such as Kisan-Mela, GRAM and farm women’s day etc. Extension talks and Radio talks on related topics are also given by competent faculty members of the department.
