About the Department

 Extension Education and Communication Management is one of the important disciplines of Home Science. With the inception of the college in 1966, the courses of the discipline have been an integral part of the undergraduate programme. In 1970, the area emerged as a separate department of the college. The Post graduate programme in the discipline was introduced in the year 1980 and Ph.D. by thesis from 1991. The Ph.D. Programme by course work was initiated from January 2004. To facilitate students with better job opportunities just after B.Sc. programme, the department started professional package on Information Technology and Communication Management in the year 2006. So far 190 M.Sc. and 15 Ph.D. students have passed out from the department.

The broad purpose of the discipline is to train students in extension techniques and communication technologies to enable them to transfer Home Science information and technologies to rural families in such a way that people understand and adopt new ideas and improved technologies for better family living.

Mission

To train students in Information and Communication techniques and technologies for effective transfer of appropriate technologies to rural families for better family living and professional career of students.

Objectives:

  • To understand need and role of extension and communication management in upbringing the family and society.
  • To develop understanding in planning and using various methods and media for transfer of appropriate technologies to rural families.
  • To develop professional competence in planning and preparation of information and communication material for rural and urban community.
  • To develop necessary competence to take up profession in information technology and communication management.

AICRP Research

In order to capture the multi-dimensional role complexities of rural women and to accord empirical data to development planners for endowing rural women with holistic entity towards improving the quality of life of rural household, the All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) in Home Science Extension was started in December,1996. This component aimed at generating national level database of Gender on various aspects of agriculture and allied fields, Identifying, Scientifically validating, documenting and disseminating indigenous knowledge, developing and field testing of technology kits, building livelihood security through income generating activities, designing training modules and improving quality of life of women through trainings.
